Frequently asked questions

Q:
What happens when we come for the first counselling session?

A:
We offer a free assessment session (1 hour). In this session both parties will be invited to say how they see the problem(s) and whether they are willing to commit to working towards change and healing in the marriage. At the end of the session you can go away and think about whether you want to commit to working with us and each other, for at least six sessions. Should you decide that you want to continue we may ask you to complete a psychodynamic questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire will allow us to see the strengths and the growth areas in the relationship (See Prepare/Enrich Website for more details) and to plan our work accordingly.

Q:
How long does a session last?

A:
Typically a session would last for one hour. For marriage preparation we usually allow four to six 90 minute sessions according to the needs of the couple.

Q:
How often do the sessions take place and for how long?

A:
The first five sessions would usually be weekly. After a review on the sixth session we could discuss whether the sessions should continue, and if so whether frequency should be less often. We would generally work in blocks of six sessions with a review always falling on the sixth session in the block.

We may give out homework to be completed before the next session. Homework is an important part of the work that we do with the couple.

Q:
How much do you charge?

A:
We are a Charity and all Counsellors are fully qualified volunteers. To cover expenses, training and Supervision we ask for a contribution according to employment status and income. Typically we would invite £25 to £35 per session (if both employed) and a sliding scale for others. No-one will be turned away for financial reasons.

Q:
Do we have to be Christians?

A:
No, but we will always approach our counselling from a Christian perspective and would expect you to work with us in this.

Q:
Do we have to be married to receive counselling?

A:
Yes, our focus is on married husbands and wives.
